Hasan al-Sabah was born in the Iranian city of Qom in the 1150s. He made the fortress of Alamut his center and began spreading his message across the surrounding vast regions. After some time, he also seized several nearby fortresses. Some people were forced into submission, while others, impressed by his preaching, opened their doors to him. The background of this novel is tied to Iran’s ancient history. It narrates the tale of that deceitful ascetic whose conspiracies and revolutionary activities shook the foundations of the Seljuk Empire in the late fifth century Hijri. Hasan al-Sabah was a contemporary of Imam Ghazali, and a fellow student of Iran’s Prime Minister Nizam al-Mulk Tusi and the philosopher-poet Omar Khayyam. He had once attained a high position in the Iranian empire, but due to his cunning, he was soon dismissed.
In the fortress of Alamut, he created an artificial paradise to mislead the people. This paradise was filled with countless beautiful women, whose allure deceived people into accepting his invitation. But one of these “houris” exposed all of his trickery. Thus, the novel remains colorful and captivating from beginning to end, interwoven with historical events of beauty and love.
